“Female toplessness is legal in a lot of places in the US (although not where I live), and I’d be meeting the letter of the law with a couple of Band-aids. But I have a gut feeling that if I go anywhere that there are people—and particularly anywhere there are children—nobody’s going to be too happy about my Band-aids. The enforcement is social; women just don’t go around topless in the US.

It bothers me because it’s unequal, but it also bothers me in its implications: that my body is inherently sexual, and a man’s body isn’t. It feels like men are being viewed through the first-person lens of “it’s nice to feel the sun on my skin, and I don’t mean anything by it” and women are being viewed through the distinctly third-person lens of “it’s inappropriate for me, a heterosexual man, to see her sexy parts.” It ignores the experiences of people who are turned on by male chests and somehow manage to contain themselves when they see one.”

I’m a topless sunbather. It’s legal in Sobe, though I’m often the only one…or one of very few. I get glares from a lot of women & ogles from a lot of men.
I’m a nudist. If I could be at the nude beach every day (where everyone is respectful & chill), I would be, but it’s a 40 minute scooter ride…a 2-minute bike ride obviously wins.
So, I keep my energetic shields up. Gotta protect myself from the bad vibes of the standard American female body shaming sexually repressed worldview. But I own that toplessness. I sunbathe with pride, I walk with pride, I frolic in the ocean with pride.
Female toplessness (and nudism in general), for me, was first about body positivity. Knowing myself. Loving myself. My curves. My stretchmarks. My funny tanlines caused by the shadows of my boobs.
But it’s also a nude revolution, a topless revolution. By owning my toplessness & simply enjoying my beach time l just ike every other beach-goer, I’m taking a stand that the female body is NOT “inherently sexual.” And if just one person picks up on that message from my actions, then I’ll count that as a success.

Earth Day Every Day: 21. Hair Care

For about 2 months, I’ve been washing my hair with Baking Soda & conditioning it with Apple Cider Vinegar.

This is awesome & eco friendly because:

My hair looks awesome. Just getting this one out of the way. If you’ve been following me since February, you know that I deserve some awesome hair). It has great texture & volume, so
I’m not using any additional products loaded w/ toxic chemicals.
I only need to wash my hair every 4-5 days = less time in the shower = less h2o, less energy used (I do give it a rinse every time I shower)
I’m not filling up landfills w/ plastic containers (I just reuse the bottles I have over & over again).
I have no use for a hairdryer (to be fair, I never really did, I’ve been conserving that energy for years!), and
I have no use for additional haircare products. (Seriously, my hair air dries awesome. And you already know it looks awesome.)
I’m also saving money because of the previous 5 items.

Awesome Post-Scooter-Ride Hair

Recipe/Instructions:

Ratio for both mixtures is 1 tbsp to 1 c h2o.
After I’ve wet my hair, I squirt the baking soda mixture all over my head, focusing on the scalp. Then I kind of give the scalp a nice rub/scrub and work the baking soda more into the rest of the hair. Rinse.
I squirt the apple cider vinegar mixture mostly on the ends, then give it a rinse. A little goes a long way. You may need to experiment, but you’ll figure out what works for you. (My best friend, for example, has hair that is much coarser & thicker than mine…she uses more AC vinegar mixture than I do.)

I floss every day. You should too. I love the Eco-Dent brand because it comes in a cardboard container instead of a usually-not-recyclable-plastic AND because it’s vegan. Highly recommend.

And seriously. Daily flossing. Super important.

Never mind, just visited their website.. They sell them both ways, these ones are way better and cheaper though. I’m going to have to tell Whole Foods they better get them!

Yes, that. When I first started buying this brand, they only had the cases you mentioned. I now use the plastic hard case for travel. :)

Buy a toothbrush made from recycled materials from an awesome company like Preserve.
Use said toothbrush on your teeth (soft bristles best, twice a day…I care about dental hygiene too!) for about three months.
When you’re ready for a new toothbrush on your teeth, use the old one to scrub mildew (with baking soda and vinegar, of course).
Return the toothbrush to the awesome company you bought it from in the mailer it came in so they can recycle it!

Is it a cop-out that I’m so often thankful for my friends? When I’m in a quandary, I need to talk it out…a few times. With one friend, then another, perhaps another, then in my journal, then maybe even with one of those friends again. It helps me get my shit sorted out. I’m still conflicted about this situation, but I’m OK with that now, I’m working on not over-thinking and letting what will be will be.
